Robert L. “Bob” Pollard, 85, of Salem, passed away Sunday, December 28, 2014.

He was born in Hemphill, West Virginia, a son of the late Cicero and Mattie Burns Pollard and had been an area resident for over 37 years. A World War II veteran, he served in both the US Navy and Marine Corps, and was employed in many different jobs from a coal miner in West Virginia to a Police Officer in Los Angeles, CA, and finally retiring from the maintenance dept. of Rowe Furniture 23 years ago. Robert enjoyed boxing, woodworking country music and was the # 1 fan at his granddaughters’ sporting events. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 6 sisters.

He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Barbara Brickey Pollard; a daughter, Sandy Helton and her husband Chris; son, Danny Wooldridge and his wife Donna;; four grandchildren, Julie Helton and Anna Helton, Crystal Hight and her husband Derek, and Joey Wooldridge; 4 great-grandchildren, Alex, Khristinia and Cameron Wooldridge, and Alyssa Hight; numerous nieces and nephews, including special nieces Margaret Cook and Betty Barton, and special nephew Jackie Blevins, and his loving Chihuahua, Bobbie Sue.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the VA Hospice Care Center staff for the love, care and concern given to Bob during his stay there.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM, Saturday, January 3, 2015 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8pm, Friday, January 2, 2015 at the funeral home. An online guest book is available for family and friends by visiting www.johnmoakey.com.
