Obituary for Charles Clay "Charlie" Morris (Morris)

Charles Clay "Charlie" Morris (Morris)
Charles (Charlie) Morris, 67, of Salem, passed away at Lewis Gale Medical Center on Sunday, August 10, 2014, after a battle with Pulmonary Sarcoidosis. He was born September 3, 1946, to the late Charles Dow Morris and Margaret Elizabeth Fletcher of Cumberland, MD. He is survived by his wife of forty years, Adele Morris; two daughters, Nora and Emmalee; son-in-law, Patrick Westerfeld; and grandsons, Trey and Griffen Westerfeld. He is also survived by sister, Donna Eirich (Chuck); sister, Bonnie Jean Miller; nephew, Brian Miller (Stacey); and numerous other extended family members of Cumberland, MD.
He met his wife while in college at Frostburg State University in Frostburg, MD. After graduating in 1969, he went to work for Norfolk and Western Railway in Roanoke. While in their employ, he lived in Chicago, IL, where his daughters were born, and New Orleans, LA, before moving his family to Salem in 1993. He retired from The Norfolk Southern Corporation in 2001. During retirement, he enjoyed working on various projects around his home; helping his eldest daughter, Nora renovate her home in Elkins, WV; attending Salem Red Sox games; and spending time with his grandsons, whom he adored. His constant companion was his rescue dachshund, Schnitzel, whom he adopted from the Salem Animal Shelter. He, along with his wife and daughters, also adopted three other rescue dachshunds over the years.
A memorial service to honor Charlie’s life will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 6 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. The family will receive friends on hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family would be extremely grateful for any donations made in his name to the Salem Animal Shelter; 1301 Indiana Street, Salem, VA 24153, so that other animals in need may find loving homes too.
