Obituary for Susan Spencer Butler (Spencer)

Having battled Parkinson’s Disease for over the last 15 years, her suffering has now turned to serenity. Susan Spencer Butler succumbed to this debilitating disease on May 29, 2019, at Woodhaven Nursing Home. She is survived by her devoted mother, best friend, and confidante, Nelia Spencer and is preceded in death her beloved father, William Spencer, both of Roanoke, Va. She will be greatly missed by her older sister, Sally Cox (Ken) of Cary, NC; her 3 younger brothers, William Spencer Jr. (Debbie), Joel Spencer, and James Spencer (Jill) all of Roanoke, Va., as well as her many nieces and nephews. Married for almost 48 years, she is survived by her husband, Don Butler, Salem, Va, who shared in her love of her National Champion UVA Cavaliers she would excitedly watch every March Madness with anticipation. Blessed to have known her simply as Mom, she will be remembered fondly by her daughter, Kimberly Vanover, and honored lovingly as Meme by her 2 grandchildren, Erika and Jacob. She is also survived by numerous relatives as well as dear friends and neighbors she has encountered through the years.
A funeral service to celebrate her life will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 3, 2019, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, Va. with Pastor Mark Vaughn officiating. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem, Va.
Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2019, at the funeral home.
