Obituary for Ercil Hylton Poff

Ercil Hylton Poff, 84, of Salem, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2019 in Rocky Mount, Va. He was born on September 14, 1934 in Floyd, Va. to the late Sherman Rosco and Mamie Bell Poff.
Ercil’s faith in God was revealed by his life. He loved the Lord and was dedicated to the work God called him to do. He was a faithful member and deacon of Community Church for numerous years. Ercil retired from Lowes Lumber and Hardware after 30 years of service, as well as the Virginia Department of Transportation after 20 years of faithful service. He was last working with Walmart of Salem as a greeter with 10 years under his belt. He thoroughly enjoyed traveling and hunting, but will be remembered most as a loving husband, brother, and friend to all that knew him!
In addition to his parents, Ercil was preceded in death by his sister, Freda Louise Grubb.
Family remaining to cherish his memory includes his wife of 63 years, Christine Walters Poff; brothers, Hansford R. Poff (Trudy), and Vestal E. Poff, and fiancée, Ruth Snead; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Monday, June 10, 2019 from 6 until 8 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem.
Funeral services honoring Ercil’s life will be conducted on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Dan Carawan officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park; Salem, Va.
