Print
Virginia Holden Dunville, 94, of Salem, Va., loving wife and mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died on Saturday, March 2, 2019.

Virginia was born September 21, 1924, in Illinois City, Ill. to the late Glenn B. and Laura W. Holden. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, Dorman H. Dunville; and by her siblings (and their spouses), Edgar (Rachel), Charles (Mildred), Helen (James) Larsen, Birchard (Mary), and Lila Shotwell; and 3 sisters-in-law, Ruth and Mary Holden, and Nahja Haagensen.

Virginia was a longtime and very active member of Westhampton Christian Church, and a member of the Fort Lewis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a volunteer and staff member at Good Samaritan Hospice for more than 15 years. Her love of reading led her to a volunteer position with the Salem Public Library. Family and friends will fondly remember her for her deep love of and devotion to her family, keen mind, avid interest in politics and current events, love of games and competitive spirit, genuine interest in and caring for others, and sharp wit.

Survivors include her children, Jennifer (Howard) Gavin, Glenn (Tina) Dunville, Lila Belongia, and Holly Moore; grandchildren, Jessica (Steve) Hilbish, Lila (Brian) Reddan, Laura (Jon) Wilson, Jochen (Leslie) Dunville, Seth (Claire) Moore, Ben (Tammy Tripp) Moore, and Moriah Moore; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Harvey; brothers-in-law, Stewart Shotwell, Joseph (Pat) Dunville, and Glen Haagensen; sister-in-law, Julia (Ed) Sallin; and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.

The family extends deepest gratitude to Dr. Michael Jeremiah for the 20 years of devoted care and friendship he provided Virginia, as well as to her family in her final days. Also, sincere appreciation is expressed for the compassionate care she received at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2019, prior to a celebration of her life that will begin at 12 Noon, both at Westhampton Christian Church in Roanoke, with her grandson, Rev. Ben Moore, officiating. A graveside service at Sherwood Memorial Park will be private.

In lieu of flowers, Virginia requested donations be made to Good Samaritan Hospice or the Westhampton Christian Church Memorial Fund. Online condolences may be expressed at www.johnmoakey.com.
