Obituary for Audrey Christine Hartman (Guthrie)

Audrey Christine Hartman, of Salem, Va., died peacefully at home on Friday, October 5, 2018 at the age of 93.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Clyde Allen Hartman, Sr.; brother, Ben Guthrie; sisters, Nadine Loope, Virginia Roope, and Bun Powell; and her son-in-law, Ralph Kosko.

Surviving is a brother-in-law, Frank Hartman; and sisters-in-law, Lois Johnson, Annie Ruth Hartman, and Minnie Guthrie.

Audrey, known by all who loved her as Petie, had a great sense of humor. She was a devoted mother of 4 children (and with that many children she had to have a sense of humor), Mark Hartman, Alice Kosko, Clyde Hartman, Jr., and Danny Hartman and wife, Karen; and 4 grandchildren, Jordan, Morgan, Evan, and Samantha.

Our dear mother, who put up with our shenanigans, quietly kept us on the straight and narrow. As children, we were taken “to the country,” otherwise known as Aunt Nadine’s. She was an amazing cook, and loved flowers – always having her lawn covered in beautiful blooms. She loved watching soap operas. Friday nights were spent playing cards, and later in life she discovered bingo and casinos. She loved country and gospel music. She loved her family very much.

We would like to thank Innvonage and Intrepid Hospice for their loving care in her final days. A special thanks to our cousins, Lou Ramsey and Nancy Proffitt, who were always there for our family.

Visitation will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, in the funeral home’s chapel with Bishop Paul Rucker officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
