Judith Ison Painter, 86, of Salem, Va. passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 10, 2018.

She was born in Norton, Virginia, on January 28th, 1932.

Judy was predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years, Dr. Louis W. Painter Sr.

She was also predeceased by her parents Kinard and Bertha Ison, and her two sisters, Phyllis Yvonne Ison and Jimmie Marcum.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her daughter Jeanne Wooldridge and husband Al; sons, Louis W. Painter, Jr. and wife, Debbie and David H. Painter and wife, Susan; five grandchildren, Marshall Wooldridge, Kirk Wooldridge, Austen Wade, Ryan Wade and Nick Wade; two great grandchildren, Kyla Grace Wooldridge and Lukas Wooldridge, and her siblings, sister, Donna Raines and husband Robert, brother Duane Ison and his wife, Joyce.

Judy retired from nursing to become a devoted mother and homemaker. She always put family first and was very involved with helping to raise her grandchildren. She loved gardening, reading, and board and puzzle games (especially with grandchildren) and would always share her honest opinion. In her later years, after the passing of her beloved husband, she showed her strength and independence by insisting on taking care of herself. Judy was truly a beautiful soul, her light will be carried by all her family and friends. To quote one of her grandsons, "She was stubborn. She was sassy. She was classy. She was beautiful."

The family wishes to sincerely thank The Salem Presbyterian Church (Pastor Dr. Will Robinson, Associate Pastor Rev. Janet Chisom and Parish Nurse Kitty Beehner) for their constant presence and prayers.

The Roanoke Memorial Hospital Palliative Care unit, Richfield Living and Gentle Shepard for the wonderful medical care and support given.

Special thanks also goes to her sister in-law Joyce Ison for not only helping Judy get around over the last year, but for being a true friend.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 14th at 11am at Salem Presbyterian Church Associate Pastor Rev. Janet Chisom will officiate. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 pm on Monday, August 13th at John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home, Salem.
