John Phillip Newton, 81, Shallotte, NC, died Saturday, March 17, 2018.

Born in Scotland County, NC on June 22, 1936, he was a son of the late Earl Newton and Veronica Scholl Newton. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, James Newton, and a sister, Catherine Bream.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, a retired educator, and a member of the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Donnelly Newton; daughter, Veronica Bandy (James), Roanoke, VA; sons, Matthew Newton (Laura), Williamsburg, VA, and John J. Newton, Roanoke, VA; brothers, Charles Newton, Mt. Carmel, IL, Harry Newton, Hamlet, NC, and Donald Newton, Monroe, LA; sister, Mary Anna Newton-Davis, Rockingham, NC; and four grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at 10:00am in St. Brendan The Navigator Catholic Church, Shallotte, NC.

Burial will be Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 12:30pm in the Sherwood Cemetery, Salem, VA.

The family will receive friends from 7:00pm until 9:00pm, Friday, March 23, 2018 at John M. Oakey Funeral Home, 305 Roanoke Boulevard, Salem, VA.
