Obituary for Betty Pauline Mabe (Cundiff)

Betty Pauline Mabe (Cundiff)
Betty Pauline Cundiff Preston Mabe, 88, of Salem, Virginia, completed her journey on earth and went home to Jesus on Monday, January 28, 2019, surrounded by her loving family. To know Betty was to love her. One could never leave her presence without a hug, kiss and a smile. She loved simply yet wholeheartedly and unconditionally. She was a devoted mother to three children and an actively involved grandmother to her four grandchildren. Christmas at Betty’s house was always special. She put her every effort into planning, purchasing, and wrapping beautiful Christmas presents for everyone. Life for Betty was about putting others before herself.
Raised on a tobacco farm in Franklin Country, luck would have it that this family farm would eventually become lakefront property. Betty and her family made countless memories at Smith Mountain Lake that continue and live on to this day. Betty lived in Salem from 1956 until her passing in 2019. She had a strong work ethic, managing two jobs both at General Electric for 27 years and 18 years at Leggett (Belk). She went above and beyond for the needs and wellbeing of her family. Betty and Jimmy found a passion in weekly square dancing which allowed for the formation of lifelong friendships. When she wasn’t promenading, Betty enjoyed trips to the beach and lazy weekends at the lake, while also managing to get away for a shopping trip here and there. Attending church on Sundays was a priority even when her health was frail. Betty so appreciated the immense love she received from her church family. It was a true reflection of Jesus Christ. Her husband of 42 years, Jimmy, was a tremendous blessing to Betty and the entire family. His loving, selfless and tireless care for Betty in her last years on earth provided the example of a committed, sacrificial marriage. Betty is preceded in death by her loving mother and father, Harry and Maggie Cundiff; her daughter, Peggy Evans; and her brother-in-law Edwin Brown.

She is survived by her loving husband, Jimmy Mabe; sons, Mike Preston and wife, Melissa and David Preston and, wife Kimberly; grandchildren, Ashley Crisp, Stacy Stanley, Victoria Preston and Jake Preston; great-grandchildren, Charley Crisp, William Crisp and Ryder Stanley; sister, Georgia Brown; brothers, Douglas Cundiff and wife, Evelyn, Junior Cundiff and wife, Sandra; nephew, Greg Cundiff; and stepchildren Steve Mabe and Carol Batchelor.

Private interment will take place with her family and a celebration of life will take place at 6:00 p.m. at Fellowship Community Church located at 1226 Red Lane Extension in Salem, Virginia.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2019, at Fellowship Community Church.
