Obituary for Herman Donald Fielder

Chief Petty Officer Herman Donald Fielder, 82, of Salem, passed away Friday, January 4, 2019.

He was born on May 9, 1936, a son of the late Herman H. Fielder and Lelia Folden Hines, and proudly served his country for twenty years in the US Navy. While in the Navy he served aboard seven different ships and was extremely proud of his tour on the Presidential Yacht, the USS Sequoia, serving President Lyndon Johnson and his wife Lady Bird. Following his service he was employed as a Deputy Sheriff and Director of Maintenance at the Roanoke County Jail from 1980 thru 1995. In his spare time he enjoyed ceramics and making porcelain dolls. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, John Hines; his son, Terry Donald Fielder; and a sister, Dorothy New.

He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Vest Fielder; brother-in-law, Dwayne Vest; step-brother, Fred Hines; step-sister, Sue Johnson; special niece, Meghan M. Vest; special nephew, Phillip D. Vest; his “special daughter” Heather Johnson; God-daughters, Angie Quesenberry and Faith Malloy, her husband Mitch and their daughter Eden; numerous nieces and nephews; two “fur-babies” Boots and Princess, and a daughter and two granddaughters.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at Piedmont Pentecostal Holiness Church 5007 Jewell Dr. Shawsville, VA. The Rev. R. Glennard Quesenberry will officiate. Burial will follow at Piedmont Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM, Monday, January 7, 2019 at John M. Oakey & Son, Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the donor’s local animal shelter, or to the Wounded Warriors Project P.O.Box 758517 Topeka, KS 66675.
