Obituary for Darrell Lee Camden

Darrell Lee Camden, 58, of Roanoke, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at his residence. Darrell served as a private in the U.S. Army and Reserves in 1984 where he received training in masonry, a trade he was always proud of. He was a free spirit who lived life on his own terms. He loved the outdoors, sunshine and sitting on a porch picking a tune on his guitar. He learned to play guitar in his younger years from a family member and carried a pitch pipe and a Tom T. Hall song "The Year that Clayton Delaney Died" with him in his briefcase. In his last days, he often spoke of how proud he was of his three children. He loved strawberry milkshakes, homemade chocolate cake and good home-cooked meals. One of the family's fondest memories of Darrell is how much he loved to eat a whole plate of pan-fried potatoes that Mama Elsie would make, smothered with a whole bottle of ketchup. In memory of Darrell, the family asks that you take life a little slower, travel more and enjoy the simple things. Arrangements are by John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home and Crematory, Salem, (540) 389-5441.
