Obituary for Elmyra Burch Mitchell

Elmyra B. Mitchell, 98, passed away after a brief illness on June 8, 2018.

She was born on May 23, 1920, a daughter of the late Benjamin A. Burch, Sr. and Miriam W. Burch. Elmyra married her Jefferson High School sweetheart, graduated from Lewis-Gale School of Nursing in 1942, and had a long career in the nursing profession. Known as “Sugar” to her great-grandchildren, she spent her retirement years playing cards with friends, participating in the Nightingale Association, enjoying yard sales, traveling, watching the New York Yankees, and holding babies. Valuing her relationship with her extensive family, she was a friend and mentor, and lived a noble life.

In addition to her parents, Elmyra was preceded in death by her husband, Rex T. Mitchell, Jr.; sister, Emily Burch Ross; and brothers, Benjamin A. Burch, Jr., and Joseph G. Burch.

She is survived by her daughters, Suzanne Adams of Roanoke, and Mickey Teese (Steve) of Warsaw, VA; grandchildren, Elizabeth Crockett (Mark), Kelly T. Clifton (Donnie), Richard Morgan, Matthew Teese (Liz), and Rex Mitchell Teese (Ashley); great-grandchildren, Benjamin Teese, Mitchell England, Emily Teese, Dylan Leach, James David Morgan, Jake Teese, Michael Morgan, Kendall Leach, Rex Morgan, Zelda Gaines, and Ezekiel Teese; sisters, Martha Burch Agner and Betty Luber (Mack Bullard).

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of her life to be held at the Fairington Apartments Community Room on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at 3 p.m.
