Obituary for Donald William "Don" Mayberry

Donald “Don” William Mayberry, 74, of Salem, passed away on Wednesday, April 25, 2018. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Burton William Mayberry and Elsie Estelle Tyree Mayberry.
Left to cherish his memory is wife, Joanne Ashwell Mayberry; sons, Gary Lynn Mayberry (Pam) and Matthew Scott Mayberry (Amy); sister, Peggy Campbel (Nat); and grandchildren, Courtney, Liam, Logan, and Madison.
Don was a strong supporter of the Roanoke community, particularly events and venues like Festival in the Park, Virginia Museum of Transportation, and the Science Museum of Western Virginia. He was proud of his career at Norfolk and Western Railway which later became Norfolk Southern where he started his career as an electrical engineer, moving upwards to becoming Vice President Mechanical and Chief Mechanical Officer and later being promoted to the Vice President of Research and Test.
After working for 35 years with the railroad, Don spent his retirement traveling the world with Joanne. They visited places like the Pyramids of Egypt and the Great Wall of China. Another great joy of Don’s retirement was gardening, watching wildlife, and spending time with his grandchildren.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Ezekiel Jones, Dr. William Fintel, Dr. Andrew Fintel, and the staff at Blue Ridge Cancer Center as well as the medical staff of 6 West at Lewisgale Medical Center.
In Don’s memory and for love of his community, the family requests that a donation be made to the Virginia Museum of Transportation or Roanoke Rescue Mission.
A period of visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, April 27, 2018 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. A private memorial service will be conducted among the family.
