Viola M. McClure, 98, of Salem, died on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at the Assisted-Living facility, The Oaks at Richfield in Salem.

Viola was born on September 20, 1919 in Elk Creek, Virginia to George F. McCormick and Mamie Hale McCormick. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, B.R. “Monk” McClure, and brothers George F. McCormick, Jr., Elk Creek, VA., W. Vance McCormick, Elk Creek, VA., Donald McCormick of Roanoke, VA., and a niece, Julie Ann McCormick, Roanoke, VA.

Viola is survived by three sons, Thomas D. McClure (Martha) of Roanoke, VA, Reid S. McClure (Terri) of Salem, VA, and George B. McClure, MD (Helen) of Lakewood, WA; grandchildren, Heather M. Owen of Roanoke, VA, Jonathan A. McClure (Jacquie) of Bridgewater, VA, step-grandson, Scott J. Ikard of Austin, TX, granddaughters, Virginia G. McClure of Los Angeles, CA., and Kathleen E. McClure of San Diego, CA; great-grandchildren, Ian M. McClure and Alexander McClure of Bridgewater, VA.

Viola graduated from Elk Creek High School in 1936 and then came to Roanoke to attend National Business College. It was there that she met the man she would later marry, Beverly R. McClure, in November of 1938. Upon graduation from NBC, she went to work as a secretary at Equitable Life Insurance Company in Roanoke. Viola later worked as church secretary at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, and in 1961, she assumed the position of office manager at Langhorne Pharmacy in Salem.

Viola was a woman of devout faith, dedicating herself to the love of church and service to others. Her grand passion in life was volunteerism. Viola was a loving member of Salem Presbyterian Church, spending many wonderful years there in leadership roles and as a volunteer. She served a key role in the Salem Community Clothes Closet as Treasurer. Viola also served for many years as a docent for the Salem Museum.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 20, 2018 from 5 to 7 PM at John M. Oakey & Son, 305 Roanoke Blvd., Salem.

Graveside services will be held 1PM, Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at Sherwood Memorial Park, 1250 E. Main St. Salem. Following interment, a memorial service will be conducted at 2PM, at Salem Presbyterian Church 41 E. Main St. Salem with Pastors Will Robinson and Janet Chisom officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Viola’s name to the Salem Museum 801 E. Main St. Salem, VA 24153 or to Salem Clothes Closet 825 S. Colorado St. Salem, VA 24153.

The family would like to extend its heartfelt love and appreciation to Mom’s beautiful family at Richfield’s Assisted Living, The Oaks, whose care and support meant so much to her, and also to Good Samaritan Hospice who, working with Richfield staff, provided a high level of care to Mom and support to our family.
