Obituary for Edgar Mack "Pete" Peters

Edgar Mack "Pete"  Peters
Major Edgar Mack Peters age 87, of Salem, VA went home to be with his Lord and heavenly family, Monday morning February 5, 2018. He was born on Friday, June 13, 1930 to the late William H. Peters and Minnie Mae Garman Peters. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by; brothers, Ralph Peters and wife, Jackie, Bobby Peters, Jimmy Peters and wife, Jane; brothers-in-law, Bill Parrish; nephews Bobby Parrish, Richard Burgess; and his beloved wife of 62 years, Claudine Brown Peters.

He is survived by four sons, Edgar M. Peters and wife, Mary, William F. Peters and wife, Heidi, David G. Peters and Connie Perdue, and Todd L. Peters and wife, Beth; grandchildren, Eric, Jordan, Toby, Lauren, and Thomas; sisters Louise Parrish, Nancy Burgess and husband, Dalton; numerous treasured nephews and nieces.

A servant of his Lord and his nation, Major Peters served in the Korean Conflict, and two tours of duty in Viet Nam as a helicopter pilot. Known to many as Pete, Edgar loved his wife Claudine deeply. She accompanied him on many military assignments, traveling extensively within the U.S. and abroad. Pete loved football, playing in high school and for the Army. He had a passion for; flying, and piloting helicopters including the Hewy and Cobra which he was one of the first to fly, as well as fixed wing aircraft. He survived seven crash landings, Major Peters was shot down once and was awarded the Purple Heart. He retired from the Army in 1971.

In 1977 the couple relocated home to Alleghany Springs in Shawsville, VA and later to Salem, VA. They enjoyed keeping up their home, gardening, entertaining, and staying active with; family, church, and community events. Pete also enjoyed golfing with dear friends. He will be sorrowfully missed and fondly remembered.

The family wishes to thank our loving friends and family, Rev. Herbert Williams, special friends and care givers; Tacara Foster and Teyauna Hayes from At Home Care Givers, and Gentle Shepherd Hospice.

The family will receive friends at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, VA on Thursday, February 8, 2018 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, February 9, 2018 at 2:00 PM with Reverend Herbert Williams officiating, burial will follow at the Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem, VA.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to White Memorial United Methodist Church in Shawsville, VA or to the National Parkinson’s Foundation.
