Dennis Alan (Red) Carter, 86, of Salem, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, January 24, 2018.

Red was born in Roanoke on Saturday, October 10, 1931. He served for 4 years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. As a graduate of the Virginia Tech School of Engineering, he retired from a supervisory position at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant after 30 years of service.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Mary Newnam Anderson and William Alvin Carter; brother, Jack Carter; brother-in-law, Edward Crowder; and a nephew, Larry Crowder.

His surviving family includes his wife, Ann Thomason Carter; sister, Jean Crowder; sister-in-law, Diana Thomason; nephews, Thomas Crowder and wife, Connie, and Mark Crowder and wife, Mary; niece, Mary Painter and husband, Johnnie; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; and his beloved dog, Chewy.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 26, 2018, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018, in the funeral home’s chapel with Rev. Greg Hetherington officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park.
