Ruby Young  Jenkins
Ruby Young Jenkins, 85, a lifelong resident of Salem, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 13, 2017.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband and best friend, Paul Jenkins; parents, Andrew Herbert Young, Corabelle Ingram Young, and Mary Sue Shumate Young; brothers, Robert L. Young, Harry W. Young, and H. Kenneth Young; and sisters, Hazel Young, Louise Hurt, and Nancy Young.

Her surviving family includes her son, Steven P. Jenkins; daughter, Janet L. Jenkins; sisters, Claudine Childress and Fern Henry; sister-in-law, Judy Young; brother-in-law, Jessie Chitwood; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruby loved children. She retired as Assistant Manager of the cafeteria at East Salem Elementary School in 1997. Ruby was an avid sports fan and loved football, baseball, and basketball. She supported Salem High School, Virginia Tech, the Atlanta Braves, the Miami Dolphins, and the Salem Red Sox. Ruby loved to garden and travel. She was blessed with many friends who were all there for her. A special thanks to Margie for being her “buddy”.

Ruby required constant supervision during the last six months. She was a participant at the Feinour Center during the day. Ruby loved the staff (angels all) and called them “my little kids” or “my friends”. Heartfelt thanks, love, and gratitude to you all for loving her and caring for her and being there on good and bad days. You gave her a sense of purpose as well as a semblance of normalcy. God bless you! Also a special thanks to Friendship Health and Rehab 2 North for the wonderful care, compassion, and love shown during her final days.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2017, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2017, in the funeral home’s chapel with Rev. Brenda Rowe officiating. Interment will immediately follow inside the Sherwood Memorial Park Abbey.
