Obituary for Robert Marion "Bob" Friend

Robert “Bob” Marion Friend, 90, of Salem, passed away Saturday, December 9, 2017. He was the husband of Betty Dagenhart Friend.

Mr. Friend was born September 19, 1927, in Roanoke, a son of the late Victor H. Friend, Sr. and Pearl Wilkinson Friend. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1946. One month later, in September, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. In March of 1947 Truman released the draftees and Bob then began attending Bluefield College in May. He then attended Roanoke College in September of 1948. Then, in August of 1950, Bob joined the U.S. Air Force and was discharged in November 1953. In February of 1954 he attended Roanoke College again and graduated in February of 1955. From there he went on to teach school at Fieldale, Turbeville, and Covington. He also attended George Peabody College in 1957 and then went on to attend the Medical College of Virginia in September 1958 and then graduated with a Master’s Degree in May of 1963. In June of 1963 he began his career as a Pharmacist. Bob was a member of Community Baptist Church in Salem where he was a deacon. He really enjoyed serving and interacting with the people of his church, especially the young children. He also loved playing tennis.

In addition to his wife, Betty, Mr. Friend is survived by his son, Charles L. Friend and wife, Ann; daughter, Cindi D. Anderson and husband, Rick; grandchildren, Emma Jane Friend and Lindsay Anderson; brother, Victor H. Friend, Jr. and wife, Betty; and sister Peggy Harris and husband, Paul.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Friend was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Hudson Friend.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 pm Saturday, December 16, 2017 at CommUNITY Church in Salem with Pastor Dan Carawan officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
