Obituary for Rita Shoemaker Everhart

Rita S. (Parr) Everhart, 84, of Salem and formerly of Roanoke, joined Heaven’s choir on Sunday, December 3, 2017.

She was preceded in death by husband, John; and mother and father, C.T. and Vera Shoemaker.

Her surviving family includes her sisters, Joan Philpott and Barbara Adams and husband, Denny; and children, Daniel Parr and wife, Kay, Thomas Parr and wife, Susan, and Michael Parr and wife, Lindsey. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Kori, Matthew and wife, Lori, Kari, Rachel, and Caleb; and many nephews and nieces.

She retired from the Social Security Administration. Her passion was spreading the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ through not only her music, but through her life where she spent many hours at Virginia Heights and Colonial Avenue Baptist Churches as a choir member, leading children’s choirs, and Sunday school classes.

Our gratitude to the staff at Brookdale of Salem.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A graveside service will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, at Sherwood Memorial Park with Rev. Hilton Jeffreys officiating.

In lieu of flowers, a charitable contribution can be made in her name to the charity of your choice. Online condolences may be expressed at www.johnmoakey.com.
