Obituary for Steven Russell Mowles

Steven Russell Mowles
Steven Russell Mowles of Salem went to be with his Lord and Savior after a long battle with cancer on July 29, 2017 at the age of 57. He is preceded in death by his father, James Calvin Mowles and brother James Calvin Mowles, Jr. He is survived by his mother Irene Mowles, wife Dena Mowles, special buddy Brenden Steele, daughters, Crystal Sampson and husband R.J., and Amanda Mowles. Step-sons Ryan and Dustin Steele. Grandchildren, Cymric Woolwine, Alyssa, Camren, and Caleb Sampson, and Ciara Steele, Sister JoAnn McMahan and husband Dave and his “favorite” niece Hope Walkup, and nephews Brian and Jimmy McMahan. Very dedicated and special friend, David Bondurant.
He retired as Street Superintendent from the City of Salem with 33 years of service.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and belonged to the Sherwood Archers. He was a great friend to many, always leading by example and adding his unique sense of humor to each and every day. Four years ago, Steve’s life was forever changed when he gave his life to the Lord. His greatest passion was loving God and living for Him. From the moment of his salvation, he has used his faith and his story to inspire all that have come into contact with him.
Special thanks to Dr. Vandanna Karri’s staff at Lewis Gale Oncology Department and Good Samaritan for taking such wonderful care of Steve.
A Celebration of his Life will be held at John M. Oakey & Son in Salem on Wednesday, August 2nd 2017. Visitation is from 3-6pm with the service immediately following.
Memorial donations may be made to The Wildlife Foundation of Virginia, http://vawildlife.org/donations.html, or The American Cancer Society, https://donate3.cancer.org, in honor of Steve Mowles.
