Vernie G. Conner, Jr., 92, of Salem, passed away Sunday, December 11, 2016.

He was born in Roanoke, a son of the late Vernie and Mamie Dowdy Conner and had been a lifetime area resident. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was retired from General Electric following many years of service. Vernie was an avid gardener who enjoyed sharing his bounty with others. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of over 50 years, Fannie Lawrence Conner; a son, Michael D. Conner and two sisters, Katherine Overacre and Daurice Conner.

He is survived by a daughter, Martha A. Conner; four sisters, Margaret Fox, Helen Kitts, Edith Bohon and Carol Flora. Also surviving are good friends, Todd Hamilton and his family, John McDaniel, and Vernie’s faithful companion Prince.

Funeral services will be held at 12PM, Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, Salem. Chaplain Gary Kingery will officiate. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM, Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hearing Center at Hollins Communications Research 2851 Enon Dr. Roanoke, VA 24019.
