Obituary for Atchler Home "Buddy" Mabry, Jr.

Atchler Home "Buddy" Mabry, Jr.
Atchler H. Mabry, Jr., better known to family and friends as “Buddy,” 85, of Salem, departed this world for his heavenly home on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 after a long illness. He was a wonderfully funny and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was the son of Atchler H. Mabry, Sr. and his wife, Lucille. As a young man, Buddy served stateside in the United States Air Force. After discharge, Buddy met the love of his life, his one and only. They married and settled in to have a family and build a home of their own. He was a salesman working for Graves-Humphries Wholesale Hardware in Roanoke for 25 years and later worked for CMT Sporting Goods until he retired. He felt a duty to serve his customers with a strong sense of “wanting to do right” by those he dealt with on a daily basis. Buddy had a strong faith in God and was an active member of his church until late in life. He was predeceased by his parents; three brothers; and two sisters. Surviving is his wife of 61 years, Merle; daughter, Lynn and wife, Linda Long; son, Michael and wife, Karrie; grandchildren, Hannah Mabry McNeill and husband, Kelly, Michael Mabry, Jr. and Abigail Mabry; brother-in-law, Jimmie Scruggs; sisters-in-law, Erika and Sissy; many nephews, a few nieces and their families who will long remember his fun-loving playful nature; and he will be missed by his happy-go-lucky four-legged friend, Bailey. The family would like to express their gratitude for the caregivers and staff of Generation Solutions and Good Samaritan Hospice who assisted in providing care for Buddy until his final moments on this earth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice, 2408 Electric Road, Roanoke, Virginia 24018. A visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 12, 2016 at John M. Oakey & Son Chapel. An interment will follow the service at Sherwood Memorial Park. Online condolences may be expressed at www.johnmoakey.com.
