Obituary for Hazel Lois Young

Hazel Lois Young, 87, of Georgetown, SC and formerly of Salem, VA, passed away Friday, November 21, 2014. She was born on October 18, 1927 in Roanoke County, VA to the late Andrew Herbert Young and Cora Ingram Young. Hazel retired from the Department of Navy as an administrative assistant to an admiral. After retiring, she moved from northern Virginia to Georgetown, SC, where she lived for 20 years. She was an active member of her Sunday School class at First Baptist Church of Georgetown. Hazel always had a smile, never complained, and took pride in always looking her best. She loved flowers, gardening, and working in her yard. She was an inspiration to all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-mother, Mary Sue Shumate Young; brothers, Robert L., Harry W., and Herbert (Kenneth) Young; and sisters, Nancy Young and Louise Hurt.
Family left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Jami Conrad and husband Rick; sisters, Claudine Childress, Ruby Jenkins, and Fern Henry; grandchildren, Brett Swearingen and wife Jessica, and Paige Covington; great grandchildren, Davis Covington and Zimiri Swearingen; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service to honor Hazel’s life will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to First Baptist Church of Georgetown, 219 Cleland Street, Georgetown, SC 29440. Arrangements by John M. Oakey and Son, Salem, 540-389-5441.
