Obituary for Harry K. "Buck" Young

Harry “Buck” Keeling Young, 77, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 30, 2012. He was born and raised in Martinsville, VA. Harry was a true American hero, proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force for nine years, where he earned the ranks of Airman 1st class and Colonel. He then dedicated 25 years of service to the Veterans Administration in Salem, VA. Harry worked as a dental technologist, and was a member of the D.A.V. Harry had many hobbies and interests, including NASCAR and woodworking. He loved to laugh, and enjoyed spending time with his family. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, kindness, and love for those who were dear to him. Harry had a deep faith, and was a member of New Covenant Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha Bradley Young; and his step-mother, Ocie Richardson Young. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Sylvia Rigney Young; father, Harry S. Young; daughter, Donna Faye Donohoo and her long term companion, Mike Watson, all of Salem; sons, Michael Barry Young of Roanoke and Mark Keeling Young and his wife, Suzanne, of Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Shane Keeling Edwards and wife, Jane, of Roanoke, Michael Todd Edwards of Salem, Sarah Cunningham and her husband, Joey, of Salem, Megan Young of Roanoke, Hannah Young of Christiansburg, and Abigail, Owen, and Madelyn Young, all of Richmond; three great-grandchildren, Kaleb Dean Edwards of Roanoke, Isabella Faye Cunningham of Salem, and Liam McClammer of Roanoke; brothers, Gene Young and his wife, Texas, and Jerry Young and his wife, Opal; sisters, H. Jackie Lester and husband, Bill, and Betty L. Jennings and husband, Chuck, all of Martinsville, VA; as well as many dear friends. The family would like to thank the staff at the V.A., Richfield in Salem, and also Amedisys Home Health for their dedicated and compassionate care throughout Harry’s illness. The family will receive friends and guests on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Roanoke with Rev. George L. Edwards officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family would like for you to consider making a donation in memory of Harry "Buck" Keeling Young to either the Local Office of Aging (LOA) Meals On Wheels or to the New Covenant Christian Church at 4807 Cove Road in Roanoke VA 24017.
